Re: Using portal as the base for NWBC

Hi Frederik and Samuli,

I collected some facts regarding the transaction topic (Frederik already found out most of it):

When connecting with NWBC against a WebAS ABAP

  • Transactions are defined in a PFCG role
  • NWBC is able to start native SAP GUI for Windows automatically, if an appropriate version is installed on the user's desktop
  • In some rare cases, there is a SAP GUI for HTML fallback (when transactions in remote systems are addressed in PFCG, and destinations and NWBC connections are not set up properly)
  • Transactions in the role system can be started from Quick Launch

When connecting with NWBC against a portal

  • Transactions are included in PCD roles using different iView types:
SAP GUI for HTML, SAP GUI for Java, SAP GUI for Windows
  • SAP GUI for Windows iViews only work with IE as a user's standard browser; SAP GUI provides a plugin for this. Looks like a SAP GUI for Windows window stand-alone (menu bar on top), not like the SAP GUI for HTML version or the SAP GUI for Windows embedded in NWBC when connected against a WebAS ABAP - those look more integrated, with the menu collapsed in the toolbar.
  • PFCG role import into PCD generates SAP GUI for HTML iViews (see Frederik's SAP_SR_CREDIT_MANAGER_5 test)
  • NWBC embeds the iView, which contains either SAP GUI for HTML or the SAP GUI for Windows control according to the PCD definition
  • Quick Launch cannot be used to start a transaction.

This is the current feature set - I'm afraid submitting a ticket will not help. With the information contained in a SAP GUI for HTML iView, NWBC is not able to start SAP GUI for Windows.

There might be a chance to do this like in the WebAS ABAP backend case for SAP GUI for Windows iViews based on SAP Shortcuts.

Frederik, we are just about to start a Customer Connection project for NWBC, so if you would like to launch this as an improvement request, you could join the project:

  • Kickoff on Tuesday, Feb 11th 2014, 4 pm Germany, South Africa, BeNeLux, Nordics, Hungary
(explaining how Customer Connection projects are set up, scope and timelines of the project. We will cover short-term improvements for NWBC for Desktop here which shall be delivered in the second half of 2014. If you are not yet familiar with CC and want to participate in this kickoff, please contact daniel-alexander.heller@sap.com to get an invitation)
  • To create improvement requests, comment, vote, etc., the following Customer Influence page for NWBC will be activated on Tuesday next week: https://cw.sdn.sap.com/cw/community/influence/cc/nwbc

Best regards,

Claudia
